Senior service dog (German Shepherd) needs home
  • What a heartbreaker. If you ever thought about getting a German Shepherd but were concerned about the training and discipline requirements, this dog might be perfect for you. He's at Manhattan Animal Care and Control. He can be put to sleep at any time because he's an owner surrender. There are lots of MOLers who can explain the adoption process and probably even drive you there to meet him and pick him up.

Owner surrender by owner who is unable to care for him (too sick)-master said:service dogs, had all his service dogs tags on him. Seemed very well behaved, calm and good with the many dogs passing by-Friendly, beautiful

These pics were taken as the master was surrendering his long time companion and helper. The man was not good looking, very pale and told me he could not care for his dog anymore. He told me too that at the counter, some people told him that they would try to help the dog... He would have tags saying that he is a service dog. Last night, few hours after being in a kennel, poor Dobbie looked so lost....laying on a tiny piece of towel.

A volunteer writes: Dobbie was surrendered to our facility as his long time owner is now too sick to care for him. Dobbie was not only a companion to his master but also his guide and helper. Yes, Dobbie was a service dog. Dobbie is absolutely gorgeous and so smart and wise looking. He is a cross between a Shepherd and a Husky as witnessed by his one blue eye. Dobbie has been very well cared for. He is well nourished, has a flawless coat and looks quite healthy. To top it all, Dobbie has the nicest behavior and is very obedient, executing in front of me all kinds of orders, even shaking my hand. The man and his dog are a beautiful pair. My heart sinks.... Many dogs bypassed us and Dobbie was imperturbable like a service dog is supposed to be. I took him for a little walk and Dobbie was just walking at my pace, checking on me from time to time. Dobbie looks like a wonderful friend. He has helped his master for so many years. Now, it is Dobbie who needs help, our help. We can not let Dobbie down. Dobbie is at the Manhattan Care Center. Let's not make this man best friend wait too long.

  • this looks like a great dog. someone will want him. I want him. but I am not in a position to have him.
  • It sounds like he is in good health. Realistically, what is his life expectancy? I have never had a dog and been afraid to take on the responsibility, but maybe ...

Hard to say, but maybe 14-ish? No question he's a senior, though.

  • Hubster says no, not ready for a dog.

Two main concerns, against which I can't argue - Both of us are traveling quite a bit recently (sometimes together, sometimes not) and I'm sure that would add complications, especially at the beginning of a pet relationship. (I'm leaving tonight, actually, for 4 days.) Also, unlike me, he DID grow up with a dog and went through the pain of having his childhood companion have to be put down and that might happen sooner with this dog than some others. He has never had another dog, because that was about the time he went off to college and then work/apartments/etc. and after we were married we were both working full time and just never felt we were prepared to go for it.

And it just isn't something we had even really thought about together at all, so I guess we'll have to let the idea grow on us for awhile, but I guess that doesn't help this guy, sadly.

  • Did Dobbie find a home yet? I keep thinking about him - I wish we were in a position to help.
  • How would this dog do in a house with say... Another dog and a cat? ... God my husband is going to kill me.
  • I keep thinking about him too. But I can't do this without my spouse being 'on board'.
  • I'm happy to report that there is lots of interest in Dobbie and it looks like a rescue has already arranged to pull him, thank goodness.
  • Good news ~ I just sent you a message as well.
  • Thank God!!

Thinking about this pup was was eating me up inside.
  • Oh man. I'm so relieved to know this dog has been rescued. I'm in tears. Phew.
