Plymouth "wagon wheel" on New Year's Eve
  • Oops.

  • The shortest distance between two points is a straight line...
  • Make that two straight lines...
  • Guess they don't have the signs up yet.
  • Was this a case of not noticing the road was plowed AROUND the circle and having too much to drink? On a different note, having just moved from Chicago, I'm finding some driving traditions in NJ to be a bit odd. For example, I was on Prospect this morning and in the process of making a left-hand turn on to Park, my left-hand turn blinker was on and I had slow the car down to make the turn, just as I was turning the wheel left, the woman on Park, who was making a left onto Prospect, practically drove right into me – as if she had the right away. I wouldn’t think twice about this, but it seems like a customary practice that happens to me at least once a week. In IL, I would have the right away, not the person making a left-hand turn from Park onto Prospect and I’ve never encountered this issue before moving here. Are the rules different in NJ?
  • No, the right of way rules are the same. There is a tradition of aggressive driving in New Jersey. Just be careful. After all this is the home of the Jersey Left (http://montclair.patch.com/articles/taking-a-jersey-left) and the state that invented putting a wall between the lanes to keep people on their side of the road (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Jersey+Wall).
  • The rules are the same, the people are generally less patient.

The first month I moved to NJ my mother in-law had me drive to Paramus, that was my first encounter with "turning right to go left." I nearly soiled myself when I had to merge onto Route 17 at 100 mph, only to then immediately exit into a parking lot and come to a dead stop in front of the store - it was like a scene from a John Hughes movie - sparks and smoke billowing from under the car – I had to peel each finger off the steering wheel; one at a time. Driving in Chicago is intense, but I also have 16+ years of learning their quirks and know the streets like the back of my hand.
  • chicagonative,

It's a trip, for sure. Just expect everyone to do what they are not supposed to do. Then at least you can be prepared. You'll still be mad but not surprised (although I often am anyway).

  • In case Sharon comes on this thread and is wondering--- it wasn't me.
  • I see they installed a huge sign the middle of the wagon wheel...that ought to slow down individuals who want to take a short-cut directly through the circle.

Whimp. I've been driving that road since I was 16!! :-D

    22 is way worse, IMHO.
  • Having my MIL in the car and providing loose directions may have severely clouded my route 17 experience. ;;) I've been on 22 and have driven into NY a couple of times without going into cardiac arrest. I will have to give 17 one more try, as I used to frequent the Container Store in Chicago and the only Container Store in NJ appears to be in Paramus on 17.
  • Yep, that is the only one. Makes me crazy. Love that store, but won't travel that far for it! Thank goodness for the internet.
  • Never have I driven on 22 without wishing I had a thermonuclear device.

    That's hilarious!

  • One of the great navigational challenges of living around here is to find the best way to get to a store on 22 without having to actually go on 22, or travel on 22 for the least possible time.

+1 I have learned many ways...

Hopefully these routes don't involve driving through the center of a wagon wheel. :-D

I admit, I thought it was a gift from you to me.

@ctrzaska - I didn't think we could make you laugh any harder but you have GOT to see the sign they put in the middle of the circle.
It's really beyond embarrassing at this point.

  • sharon - I was wondering what you and others near the circle thought of that sign. Saw it this morning when jogging through and thought it was HORRENDOUS. It's really really crazy and I think I'd be pretty pissed if that were my new view.... (I know you don't see it from your house, but for those who do.)
  • It looks like a DIYer type built it.
Next they will add stadium lighting and a score board, at the curve of Oakland and Burnett, to illuminate the football field they painted.
  • It's like they went to Home Depot and got random pieces of old wood they can't sell and used that to put up the sign.... It's bizarre.

I agree. It looks like a DIY job.
  • Alrighty, then... must go see this.
  • Can someone post a pic?
  • If I go through on my run tomorrow, I'll definitely take a pic this time. I have to admit, when I ran through this morning, I thought, "Someone must have posted this on MOL by now....."

  • I will post one in the morning...if I went now, in my pjs, it would just add another layer of bizarreness.

  • Well that, and I might accidentally run you over. I promise not to do any doughnuts around the rotary, but I'm expecting not to be able to see through the tears of laughter.
  • Or at least wait five minutes and I can take a pic of you AND the sign, which might make it more suitably Ionesco-like.
  • BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!

Is this after you've driven over me, the sign and through the circle? I'm laughing so hard I'm crying. :-))
  • HA! I didn't think of that, but it's the perfect amount of overkill.

To add to it, I had an extended remix of Der Komissar (in German no less) cranking on XM as I drove through. Awesome.

I learned to drive on route 22 at 17years old . WOW what a driving lesson
  • Even with my windows and storm windows down and curtains drawn, I swear, I heard @ctrzaska' s laughter as he drove by.

I woke up with a strong urge to place a chair and Rhino under the sign this morning.
  • So, where's the pic?
  • Yes. Please. Don't make us hop in the car and drive out there.
  • I saw them starting to put something up when I drove through that way the other day. In my rearview it looked odd. Dying to see what it looks like. Somebody get on that picture, stat! ;-) :-D
  • My husband has been sent out to take photos...
  • Not as bad as I thought. Still not going to help when it's covered in snow, I don't think.
  • What's next? A fence around the perimeter of the circle? #-O
  • A photo

    Sorry for this, but ...
    Genders.jpg
  • I saw it last night as I was visiting my boys and I have to say that it's so poorly lit and the wording so small that the sign is worthless to people unfamiliar with that intersection.
  • I love that the tire tracks are still visible and appear they might have *almost* missed the sign...
  • There's no chance I will not be acquiring four No Right Turn signs and mounting them below the rotary ones. It must be done.
  • It looks to me that the town, as a stopgap measure after some drunken moron drove through the center of the circle, took the four signs that are going to be placed at the entrances to the intersection and temporarily mounted them in the middle. In their haste, they seem to have offended the esthetic police of the neighborhood.
  • it's the intersection formerly known as Prince.

    Now that is funny!
